What is a Hollywood smile?

More about the Hollywood smile
You do not need special care, but a good routine matters: brush at least twice a day, floss and use mouthwash. Regular check-ups with your dentist help to find and prevent problems early.

Veneers and crowns are two different treatments. The main difference is how much of the tooth they cover, and how much of the tooth is removed.
Veneers:
- Material: veneers are usually made of thin porcelain or composite.
- What they cover: only the front surface of the tooth. They are used to change the colour or shape of teeth, or to even them out.
- How much tooth is removed: usually only a small amount, from the front surface. The veneer is then bonded to that surface.
- Strength: veneers are generally durable, but they cover only part of the tooth.
Crowns:
- Material: crowns are usually made of porcelain or another ceramic. Porcelain-fused-to-metal crowns are also used.
- What they cover: the whole tooth. Crowns are used when a large part of the tooth is damaged or decayed.
- How much tooth is removed: more than for a veneer, because the crown covers the whole tooth. The tooth may also need shaping to change its size and shape. This cannot be undone.
- Strength: crowns are generally stronger and can be used in more situations. Covering the whole tooth makes it stronger.
In short, veneers are mostly used to improve how teeth look, and little of the tooth is removed. Crowns are used for bigger repairs, to cover and strengthen a tooth. Your dentist will tell you which suits your teeth, and why.
Cosmetic dentistry uses several ways to cover or repair teeth. These are the main types:
Veneers: thin shells of porcelain or composite that cover the front of the teeth. They change the colour or shape of teeth and even them out. Little of the tooth is removed.
Crowns: caps that cover all or most of a tooth. They improve its shape, size and strength. They can be made of porcelain, other ceramics or porcelain fused to metal.
Composite bonding: tooth-coloured resin is bonded to the surface of the tooth. It can change the colour of a tooth, fill cracks or change its shape.
Inlays and onlays: these repair damaged or decayed parts of a tooth. An inlay fits inside the tooth. An onlay covers the inside and part of the outside. They are usually made of porcelain or another ceramic.
Zirconia crowns: zirconia is a strong ceramic used for crowns and bridges. It can look natural, and the body generally accepts it well.
Porcelain restorations: porcelain can look natural and lasts well. Veneers, crowns and other restorations can be made from it.
Porcelain veneers: a type of veneer made of thin porcelain. They are bonded to the front of the teeth, usually to improve how front teeth look.
Composite (resin) veneers: veneers made of composite resin. They can correct the colour or shape of teeth.

Frequently asked questions
Questions about treatment
Which type of veneer or crown is right for me?
It depends on your needs, the condition of your teeth, how you want them to look and your budget. Your dentist will explain the options.
What can a Hollywood smile help with?
A Hollywood smile can improve how your teeth look and work. It can help with discoloured, damaged or cracked teeth, teeth of uneven shape or size, gaps and slightly crowded teeth. Decay and gum disease are treated first. Missing teeth can be replaced as part of the plan, for example with a zirconia bridge.
How much does a Hollywood smile cost?
The cost depends on the materials, how complex the treatment is, the dentist’s experience and the equipment used. Porcelain veneers cost more than composite veneers. To find out the full cost of your treatment, send us your details using our contact form.
How long does a Hollywood smile last?
It depends on the materials, the techniques used and how well you look after your teeth. With good care, porcelain veneers often last 10 to 15 years or more, and zirconia crowns 15 to 20 years or more, as the table above shows. Your dentist can tell you what to expect for your teeth.
Do veneers damage your teeth?
Some enamel is removed from the front of the tooth, and this cannot be undone. When an experienced dentist does the work carefully with good materials, it should not harm the rest of the tooth.
Can a veneer fall off?
It can happen, but it is rare. If a veneer comes loose, contact us. It can often be bonded back on.
How can I make my veneers and crowns last longer?
Look after them as you would your natural teeth. A good daily cleaning routine and regular check-ups help them last longer.
